While many in NASCAR used the off week to relax, the driver of the No. 42 Target Chevrolet, Juan Pablo Montoya took the opportunity to continue with his philanthropic efforts. Juan Pablo and his wife Connie held a benefit concert in Panama City, Panama called Formula Latina, earlier this week to benefit his Formula Smiles foundation. Formula Latina was a private concert to benefit nearly 5000 underprivileged Colombian children to whom new opportunities are offered through sports and healthy recreation. Nearly a dozen popular stars of Latin music participated in the benefit concert.
“Connie and I are so thankful for having this All-Star lineup of musical acts take part in the event. They are the ones directly responsible for the success of the event and then ultimately for what we are able to do for the kids of Colombia,” said Juan Pablo. “Through events like this we are able to take these at-risk children away from some of their daily challenges and give them access to sports fields and recreation.”
Formula Latina 2009 kicked off with some of the most popular South American musical acts around. It was headlined by Puerto Rican pop music sensation Luis Fonsi who has many appearances on the Latin Billboard charts and multiple Gold and Platinum albums. Other acts included: Gaitanes, Zion y Lenox, R.K.M & Ken Y, Voz Veis, Peter Manjarres, Danny Marin, Jerau and Gabielle.
Through the efforts of Juan Pablo and Connie these stars of the Latin music industry became aware of their efforts in Colombia and made time to add this additional show to their busy schedules. The small group of fans attending the exclusive event were treated to a once in a lifetime experience when the All-Star lineup performed at a small venue in the Intercontinental Playa Bonita Spa & Resort in Panama City.
In addition, the Montoyas and Luis Fonsi were able to see some of the sights and sounds of Panama by touring the Panama Canal, going on a helicopter ride to tour the Blas Islands region and meeting with local kids that race go-karts.
Formula Smiles is a non-profit organization created by Juan Pablo and Connie in 2003, with the purpose of improving the quality of life of Colombian children in vulnerable areas through sports and recreation.
