The weekend started out strong for the Target team as Montoya posted the second fastest lap in first practice with a time of 29.306 seconds. Later Friday afternoon, rain forced NASCAR to cancel NSCS qualifying for the third time this season.
The Target Chevy started the scheduled 301-lap event in 12th and quickly settled into the top 10. Despite a series of early race cautions, the team opted not to make a pit stop until NASCAR displayed the competition yellow flag on lap 45. The team entered pit road for the first time on lap 45. Brian Pattie and crew made slight air pressure adjustments, four tires and fuel.
When the second round of green flag pit stops began, Montoya pitted with the leaders on lap 235 for four tires and fuel while running fifth. As pit stops cycled through, Montoya was in 12th place, with a pack of cars on a different pit cycle in the race lead. Montoya was poised for a top-10 finish when rain began to fall on lap 267. Racing action was not able to resume and Montoya finished in 12th after the event was ruled official.
Montoya and team have one pole award, seven top-10 and 11 top-15 finishes in the 2009 season. Montoya has led 17 laps and averages a 13.6 starting and 15th-place finishing position this season. Montoya remains 12th in the NSCS driver point standings –the cutoff for the Chase.
