Mika Salo собрался в NASCAR

Former Formula One driver Mika Salo is coming to NASCAR.

The Finnish born driver who competed in F-1 from 1994 to 2002 was at Lowe’s Motor Speedway this past weekend, said he has been in discussions with several NASCAR teams and expects to sign a contract this week.

«I have a little interest, just having a look to see if there’s any opportunity or anything for me to at least try the thing and know if I like it,» Salo said. «I’ve driven everything else in the world, not NASCAR, so that’s why I want to try it.»

Since leaving F-1 in 2003 Salo has been competing in the American Le Mans series and won the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta in September.

The 41 year old said while he expects to sign a contract this coming week he would like to test a stock car before making the full time commitment.

«I’ve been in contact with a few teams there’s serious contact,» Salo said. «But I’d like to try the car first before I sort of go any further. Just trying to work on a test day for now and see then.”

Salo will follow former F-1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya who drives full time for Ganassi Racing and Scott Speed who expects to make his Sprint Cup debut this week with Red Bull Racing.
